UVA black male student was left injured by Virginia's Alcohol & Beverage Control, Wednesday morning after being arrest for having a fake ID. Martese Johnson, third year student, suffered a head injury during the altercation of his arrest. Reported by the Cavalier Daily, he was required 10 stitches. There are several videos and photos of the incident as the bloody photo above shows. There has been a request by the Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe an independent investigation by state police, according to Alcohol & Beverage Control.
The images and videos shared are by fellow student Bryan Beauburn, which reported his story of the arrest. After trying to enter a local bar using a fake ID, Johnson was pulled to the side by the bouncer and speaking to police when the arrest happened. Johnson was "arrested on charges of resisting arrest, obstructing justice without threats of force, and profane swearing or intoxication in public". He was help in jail over night but released on bail Wednesday morning.
After watching the video, I can see how and why Johnson seems frustrated, angry, and confused about his arrest. Thousands of college students have fake ID's to go into bars but being harshly beaten by police was not necessary. There are reports of Johnson NOT RESISTING arrest, which is the cause of him being beaten right? These arrests, beatings, killings of black young men continue concurring throughout the country and we can not seem to find a way to come forth and take a stand.
Yes, there are so many different ways to go about handling situations such as Johnson's case. The encounter he faced was over a fake ID which MANY COLLEGE students' possess is just wrong. Johnson is a member of the Honor Committee and Kappa alpha Psi Fraternity, with no background history of violence.
